Our History
The Early Days
Herbert Egert, founder of translate.IT, began his career with studies in English, Italian, and French at Freie Universität Berlin — before switching gears to earn a degree in engineering management. This mix of languages and tech made technical and IT translations a natural fit, laying the foundation for the business that would later become translate.IT.
What started as Herbert translating solo in the early 1980s grew into a full-size venture by 1995. Along the way, he’s worn nearly every hat in the industry: language teacher, freelance translator, in-house linguist, project manager, and leader of a 35-person team. Over the years, he expanded the portfolio one step at a time, adding new subject areas with the same care and precision that defined his early work.
The 90's
translate.IT was founded in 1995 and hit its stride around the year 2000, reaching a daily output of 100,000–150,000 words — all human-translated, with zero machine assistance. The team included 35 in-house professionals supported by a network of trusted freelancers. It was a high-output operation built on precision, process, and people — not algorithms.
The 2000's
After strategically scaling back in 2002 to focus on family, Herbert welcomed his son David into the business—combining 40 years of translation expertise with fresh, modern energy. Though lean in size, we've consistently delivered premium work for major agencies (Lionbridge, RWS, Berlitz) and tech giants (Microsoft, IBM, SAP), localizing everything from Windows and Office suites to Visual Studio. Today, we bring this rare blend of veteran precision and adaptive thinking to every project, maintaining the exacting standards that made us trusted partners to firms like Deutsche Telekom and Ernst & Young while embracing today's localization challenges.
The 2020's
2022 ushered in an exciting evolution for translate.IT when David—Herbert's eldest son—formally joined the family business. Having grown up immersed in translation work, David brings both fresh energy and operational expertise honed through entrepreneurship, project management, and community leadership. More than a linguist, he's a strategic thinker who has modernized our workflows and infrastructure to handle continuous localization and complex multi-stakeholder projects with ease. Today, translate.IT operates as a powerful blend of Herbert's four decades of industry wisdom and David's process innovation—maintaining our legacy of quality while delivering the agility modern clients demand.
